OHIO Football season tickets
OHIO football opens this Saturday at 7 p.m. when the Bobcats host
Tennessee-Martin at Peden Stadium. If you haven't bought your tickets, it's
not too late. There are still a few Bobcat Family Packages left, the Best
Ticket Package in College Football History. The Bobcat Family Package
includes four season tickets (2 adult and 2 youth, ages 3 to 18) for the
unbelievable price of $79. That's four season tickets for only $79! Ohio
University faculty and staff can also purchase regular football season
tickets at the reduced price of $60--12 percent off the regular season

Community and Campus Days 2006
Community and Campus Days 2006
event is scheduled for October 12-17, 2006. The annual event is co-sponsored
by the Department of African American Studies and the Multicultural
Genealogical Center of Chesterhill, Ohio. The event was created in 2000 to
bridge the Ohio University campus with the surrounding communities,
showcasing the multicultural and multiracial heritage of Southeastern Ohio.
This year’s theme will focus on the music of the Ohio River Valley and the
surrounding Appalachian region, with a special emphasis on the music of the
Underground Railroad.
Scheduled Events:
Thursday, Oct. 12
7:00 pm: The Second Annual Alvin Adams Memorial Lecture featuring a lecture
by Ohio University Associate Professor of Telecommunications Arthur Cromwell
entitled, “The Cultural Underground Railroad.” (Margaret Walter Hall
Rotunda)
Friday, Oct. 13
8 am- 5:00 pm: “The Music of the Ohio River Valley” Symposium (Margaret
Walter Hall Rotunda)
8:00 am-9:00 am: Continental Breakfast and Check-In
9:00 am-9:15 am: Welcome and Opening Remarks
9:15 am-9:45 am: Overview of the Music of the Ohio River Valley-

9:45 am-11:45am: Panel 1: “From the Underground to Center
Stage”
This panel will explore the role of African
American music in the Underground Railroad, the Civil War, and in the first
“uniquely American popular culture form,” the Minstrel Show.
Presenters:
• Joel Bresler: (Lexington, MA): “ ‘Follow the Drinking Gourd’: A
Cultural History”
• Kelly D. Selby (Kent State University): “ ‘Dear Wife You No How
Much I Ust to Sing: Music, War, and Ohioans in the 27th
United States Colored Troops”
• Dr. Richard Wetzel (Ohio University): Working Title: “Images of
Race and Ethnicity in Early Sheet Music”
11:45 am-12:45 pm: Lunch with musical performance
1:00 pm-3:00 pm: Panel 2: “And All that Jazz”/”It’s All Jazz”
This panel will explore jazz’s role in the coal mining regions of the Ohio
River Valley and the surrounding Appalachian region.
Presenters:
• Dr. Sylvester Young (Ohio University): “The Struggle of Jazz to
Become a Part of the Culture of the U.S. with special emphasis on the Ohio
River Valley”
• Jack Wright (Ohio University): “Where Coal is King: Mining Songs
from the Appalachian Mountains”
• Dr. Christopher Wilkinson (West Virginia University): “The Culture
of Big Band Jazz and Dance Music in Black West Virginia: 1930-1942”
3:00 pm-4:30 pm: Panel 3: Working Title: “Musical Unities”
Presenters:
• Ann Ostendorf (Marquette University): Working Title: “Music
Meetings on the Riverways”
• Rick Shriver (Ohio Univeristy): Junior Norman and the Fugitives:
African American Talent Meets the Hillbilly Genre
7:00 pm: “The Music of the Underground Railroad” Concert featuring the
Heritage Chorale of Cleveland, OH. (Union Hall Theater, Chesterhill, OH)
Saturday, Oct. 14
10:00 am-5:00 pm: The Community and Campus Day Exhibition will feature
activities and booths that showcase and celebrate the musical history and
accomplishments of people of color in the Appalachia region. Entertainment
will include musical and dance performances from students and community
members. The event is free and open to the public. (Old Nelson Commons)
Tuesday, Oct. 17
Finale: A concert by the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Templeton-Blackburn
Alumni Memorial Auditorium)
