News around Campus - September 2006

Welcome Back!
A “Welcome Back” meeting has been scheduled for faculty and staff on Tuesday, September 5th from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in room 134.  At this meeting you will receive information pertaining to the upcoming academic year, a look back to Ohio University-Chillicothe accomplishments 2005-2006, and strategic directions of the campus for 2006-07. 

Lunch will be provided.

Professional Learning Communities Distributing Grants
Ohio University is invited to participate in a new funding initiative from the Ohio Learning Network (OLN).  The OLN-Southeast Ohio Regional Center at Shawnee State University will be administering small grants to institutions in the region to establish Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) concerned with technology and learning.

 A detailed RFP is available on the OLN-Southeast Ohio Regional Center web page (http://olnrc.shawnee.edu), or at the OLN site (http://oln.org and follow the links).  Briefly, awards of $1000-5000 will be made to learning communities that improve members’ abilities to learn about, gain proficiency with, and effectively utilize learning technologies.  Each community must focus on a single, campus-endorsed project that focuses on specific learning about technology use and results in improved learning environments for students.  Campuses may, however, apply for more than one grant for establishment of additional Professional Learning Communities.  In addition, a separate award will offer one $4000 grant to a learning community comprising both higher education members and K-12 educators.  This project will explore educational uses of a computer simulation program (Second Life) in English, math and science education.

All forms and instructions are available online and may be submitted electronically.  The deadline for submission is September 15, 2006.

Ciao Italy!
Don’t miss your chance to experience Education Abroad in Italy!  From November 30th - December 10th we will be immersed in art, architecture, culture, and some early education exhibits in five magnificent cities including Bologna, Parma, Venice, Florence, and Reggio Emilia. We will be involved in activities such as touring museums, cathedrals, participating in an educational workshop, and observing Italian pre-holiday festivals.
