Services
In
the Fall of 2006, OUC began offering counseling services to address the
mental health needs of students and faculty/staff who have concerns
about their students. These services will once again be offered on
campus. The counseling office will be staffed by both Keely J. Hope,
Ph.D., NCC and Christopher R. Smith, Ph.D. Both Dr. Hope and Dr. Smith
are post-doctoral fellows at Ohio University’s Counseling and
Psychological Services.
Dr. Hope will be present on campus on Mondays while Dr. Smith will be on
campus on Wednesdays. Both will be focus on education regarding mental
health issues (i.e., depression, anxiety, stress management, etc.) and
brief individual intervention with students.
Dr. Hope’s schedule is as follows: Mondays from 11:00 – 5:00
pm
Dr. Smith’s schedule is as follows: Wednesdays from 9:00 to
3:00pm
Students may “drop-in” and talk with either counselor during these hours
with or without an appointment. Both counselors are also available for
outreach or educational programming upon request.
To contact a counselor regarding a mental health issue or to request
outreach or educational programming, you may call (740) 774-7704, or you
may visit them, in room 141 Bennett Hall, during office hours.
If a student needs immediate mental health intervention, he or she may
speak with Dr. Hope or Dr. Smith only when either one is available on
campus. They will not be available for crisis, emergency, or individual
counseling outside of the regularly scheduled days on campus.
A student who needs immediate attention should contact:
Dennis Bothel: (740) 774-7229
(for non-emergency, on-campus assistance during normal business hours)
Scioto-Paint Valley Mental Health Center:
(740) 775-1260
(for information about community mental health resources during normal
business hours)
Crisis Line: (740)
773-4357 (available 24/7)

An important
clarification, however, about the role of the therapists at OU-C is to
emphasize that they will not be able to respond to crises or emergencies
when not on campus. During days and times that the therapist is
not on campus, students and faculty/staff concerned about an immediate
need, such as in the case of one having thoughts or plans regarding
harming oneself or someone else, may contact Scioto-Paint Valley Mental
Health Center’s Intake and Information line at 740-775-1260 or their
Crisis Line at 740-773-4357.
Again, a therapist will not be available for crisis,
emergency, or individual counseling outside of their regularly scheduled
day on campus. |
