What Services
are Offered?
Consultation:
If
a student is experiencing stress or is
struggling with a mental health diagnosis, the counselor will be
available to see them during “drop-in” hours. During these times,
students (or faculty/staff who are concerned about a student or who
have a mental health-related question) may visit the Counseling
Office to talk about the stressors they have been experiencing or
other mental health-related concerns. Students may also schedule an
appointment by calling the counseling office at 774-7704 or emailing
either Dr. Hope at
hope@ohio.edu or Dr. Smith at
smithc21@ohio.edu . Based on the needs of the student, the
counselor may recommend options for helping that student, including
the possibility of referring him or her into the community to
appropriate psychological or psychiatric resources.
Please note
– the counselor will not be able to respond to crises or emergencies
when he is not on campus. That is, if a student needs immediate
mental health intervention (if a student is feeling suicidal, for
example) he or she may speak with the counselor only when he or she
is available on campus. They may not be available for crisis,
emergency, or individual counseling outside of his regularly
scheduled days on campus.
During days and times that the counselor is not on campus, students
and faculty/staff concerned about an immediate need may contact:
Dennis Bothel: (740)
774-7229
(for non-emergency, on-campus assistance during normal business
hours)
Scioto-Paint
Valley Mental Health Center:
(740) 775-1260
(for information about community mental health resources during
normal business hours)
Crisis Line: (740)
773-4357 (available 24/7)
Psychoeducational & Outreach Programming
In
addition to individual sessions and referral options, Drs Hope and
Smith will also be available to engage in outreach or educational
programs for staff, faculty, and students regarding a wide variety
of mental health issues, stressors, and topics that pertain to a
university campus community. Such topics include, but are not
limited to, stress management, conflict resolution, recognizing the
presence of mental health issues, substance abuse, and eating
disorders.
